A marathon walk deserves a marathon post!!

So last night I decided to take Owen for a LITTLE walk around the block while Matt mowed the lawn. Taylor and Alli decided they wanted to come with me and ride their bikes and Caden stayed home with Matt. So we went around the block and Alli headed home but Taylor wanted to go further. At the end of our street, behind the houses, there is a walkway that separates our neighborhood (and ward) from another whole new huge subdivision. The walkway is about 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile long and just strait. There are about 5 small walkways or entries into the other subdivision (including one at the end of the trail), but I told Taylor to just stay on the trail. My thinking was that he would ride to the end and then turn around and come back to me and at that point I would turn around too and we would go home. So he is WAY ahead of me, but that's okay because I can still see him. As I'm leisurely walking along (Owen sound asleep) I look ahead to see if Taylor had made it to the end yet. I can't see him. I keep walking thinking he got off his bike and is just sitting there waiting for me, but the closer I get I still don't see him anywhere. The entries to the other subdivision are lined with vinyl fencing. As I reach the second to the last one I decide to quickly run through it to the street to see if Taylor headed out there to come down the sidewalk which we sometimes do on walks or bike rides. No Taylor. I decide he must be at the end entry behind the vinyl fence. So I get back out to the trail and force my sandaled feet to move a little faster. A few minutes later I make it to the end and Taylor is not there! I start to panic as I run out to the street again and take in the maze of streets that he could have gone down. I knew he headed the opposite direction we had come from because I hadn't seen him coming down our way when I checked the first time. So I head in that direction and see a couple sitting in their car in their drive way. I ask them if they saw a little boy on a bike and they say yes and point the direction he went. I ask them if they would mind driving in that direction to see if they could catch up to him and stop him. I take off after them. A couple minutes later they return and ask if he was wearing a blue shirt...NO!!! Wrong kid! Now what? He could be anywhere! I run to the next family outside and ask if they had seen Taylor. Everyone said no except one boy thought he saw him on another street. I thank him and take off running...thankfully Owen is still sleeping. I come to another lady working outside and her teenage son was sitting on his bike talking to her. I quickly ask them if they had seen him...Yes!!! he had just ridden past "happy as can be." I ask the teenage son if he would ride his bike in the direction Taylor went and stop him. I take off after him. As I round the corner I can't see the boy and realize there are 3 or 4 streets he could've gone down before coming to an extremely busy, main road. I pass two of the street with no sign of him. I'm wondering what I should do now. Go back to the boys house and wait, or keep looking. I decided to keep going. As I get to the second to the last street I decide to turn down there and ask yet another family if they had seen Taylor. No sign of him. So I asked if I could borrow a phone hoping Matt is done mowing and will answer the phone. As I dial I ran back out to the street to scan once more for Taylor. Finally I see the boy and Taylor at the top of the street!!! I slammed the phone shut and started yelling for Taylor who hasn't spotted me at that point. I'm sure the lady I borrowed the phone from thought I was nuts, but I didn't care. I ran up the street to meet Taylor who was now in tears and I was shaking from the subsiding adrenaline rush. The first thing Taylor says to me is..."why weren't you on the trail?" "What?!!! why wasn't I on the trail?" He thought the continuing sidewalk into the neighboring subdivision was the trail and couldn't figure out where I was. If you could see this subdivision you would know there is only one way I was LEAD down the right streets and to the right people to find Taylor. I can't stand to think what could've happened to him, but I know we were being watched over and for that I am so thankful!!! All in all I think we covered about two miles and were gone for a total of an hour...I'm thinking about 15-20 minutes of that was with Taylor being lost. Finally we made it home, and thankfully the only harm done was to my blistered feet!

That is so scary! I could just imagine the worry and panic you had while you were telling the story. I'm so glad he was safe, and you found the right people to help you.

If only you would have stayed on the trail! I can totally see the panic of which way to turn. I could still get lost there even after we ran it many many times. Glad all is well!
